Certain numbers closely resemble letters when read on a plate. These substitutions are widely understood by anyone in the private plate world.

These are not official rules. They are conventions that buyers and dealers use when reading plates creatively. Some are more universally accepted than others. 1 for I and 4 for A are the clearest. 2 for R is more of a stretch and results in lower readability scores.

Take the name JAMES. The letters J, M and S appear in plates as themselves. The A becomes 4 and the E becomes 3. So J4M35 reads as JAMES using two substitutions. With current format plates, it could look like this:

How Different Plate Formats Affect What You Can Spell
Current format plates (AB51 ABC) are restrictive. The first four characters are fixed by region and year. Only the three-letter suffix is meaningful to the buyer. Most name searches on current plates result in abbreviations or partial names unless the name is short.
Prefix format plates (A123 ABC) give more flexibility with the three-letter suffix. A longer name can sometimes use the prefix letter as part of the spelling.
Dateless plates are the most flexible. Because the format is just letters and numbers without a fixed structure, combinations like K41 or J4M or L14M are possible. These short, clean plates are the most readable and the most desirable.
